System Upgrade in Progress!
Mwahahahaa!!!! Today. Today is the day! Today I have placed my order for the final components needed to bring my ASUS brick up to the gold standard of computer ass kicking I demand! No longer will the dust cover for my USB and card readers hang open! No longer shall I have to hammer on the power button until I miraculously hit the microswitch whose hot glue failed in transit! No! Soon shall be the day of my transcendence, and it shall be luminous!
The blessed components yet to arrive:
EVGA 768mb 192bit GTX 460 superclocked edition
XFX Black Edition 750W 80+ Silver certified modular power supply
Antec 300 illusion case
I can taste them... so sweet... some assembly required, but when complete? Glorious transcendence from my wretched stock existence to an enlightened DIY persona... the archons trumpet, and from my sound card the song of eternity shall ring!
and then I'll install FFXIV.

That advert is amazing! I have to show it to my friends, as it is perhaps the perfect extension of their collective wit, much as that fact pains me to admit.
"Ha ha ha! Trumpets!" Brilliant. Could only be better if John Cleese provided the voice.

Re: System Upgrade in Progress!
Fair point. Thou hast earned thy point, good sir, but thou must pry it from mine cold, preferably still living fingers.
Why hast Newegg separated my order into two parcels? Did they not have a box large enough to contain my case and psu? Did they possess a box, but discover that my devices simply would not be contained? Has Newegg failed to tame my components, and instead has merely sent them in whatever cages were most handy to my doorstep, in the hopes that I would tame said parts for them, or at least, be too terribly savaged to complain? If it is this latter, it is my fervent hope that the ochre clad ninja that operate behind the United Parcel Service battle standard do their best to separate these inbound beasts, for while I may win out the day in repeated single combats, I fear death is my only recourse should the two unite. Divided they shall fall, but united I fear no man can stand against their wrath.
Tomorrow's dawning brings a bright future to us all, but in the incandescence, death may well stalk. Fear not! I shall take up my mighty screwdriver and my trusted pliers, that the menace of steel be routed and in the end, tamed else slain. Tis a dark work, but such acts are the burden of the enthusiast, and it is right they should shoulder them.

May the Valkyries of Glory and Honor bring the Unstoppable force and the Immovable object in their separate bondage on the winds of Victory to you, So that you may take up your ancient tools of dominance so you can do the impossible and corral these two pieces of paradoxical physics and wrest them BOTH inside their confines so that you may hear the sweet harp song of the eternal blare forth from your tower!

Re: System Upgrade in Progress!
That GTX 460 may end me.
Just saying. I had to check measurements thrice when selecting my case and I'm still not sure if I'll have ample space betwixt the HD rack and the end of the creature's carapace through which to send the sacred winds of cooling.
I still know not what orientation the fans ought be, other than I suspect the topmost 200mm ought be exhaustive, to draw the heated vapours from my case and cast them out, that they be felt ne'ermore.

Re: System Upgrade in Progress!
The 300 carries four, two front 120mm, one rear 120mm and a top mount 200mm. There is a mounting position for a fifth, the side panel of the case, but I do not believe much shall be gained by mounting anything there. I intend on simply covering the grill there to ensure the airflow goes as I want it to.
In through the front, up and out through the top. A tunnel forged of steel and plastic to convey wind and so, banish fire. Far superior to my ASUS case's single exhaust fan. I swear, this thing is designed with failure as its goal. But I shall wring the fail from its hide and so, create void to imbue with win.

Mine is like that too. In through the front, out through the back. I also have a side vent that is specifically placed over my processor to keep it cool ^_^ Same case as Thal's compy.

Re: System Upgrade in Progress!
Clarity: the components come from two separate locations, one in CA, one in NJ.
Frustration: the power supply is the one coming from CA, and thus arriving first.
In the end, I shall do battle with all three components at once. This is to be my first actual case swap, free of the confines of the simulator. My tools are ready, the dust of their dormancy removed, their edges sharpened, their grips calibrated.
This shall be my finest hour, or my greatest tragedy, as already the holy volume of 14 has been applied to my drive. There will be no time for second chances.

For such is the measure of the poet, that even the smallest works are made miraculous.

What a piece of work is a man, how noble in reason, how
infinite in faculties, in form and moving how express and
admirable, in action how like an angel, in apprehension how like
a god! the beauty of the world, the paragon of animals.

Words ring hollow when
in silent intonation
their meaning is lost.
Tis been some time since I wrote aught but prose, but I suspect the above haiku should suffice for now.
Served, yo.

Re: System Upgrade in Progress!
At the risk of being labeled a pedant: technically, the plural of haiku is haiku.
Tis like ninja. There are no ninjas; there may be ninja.
The strange part? I'm a Math nerd, English was my worst subject.

Re: System Upgrade in Progress!
Emphasis on English being my worst subject.
But then, Shakespearean Theater is only about a step aside of poetry. Hell, if one were to discard classical poetic formulae, one could argue it IS poetry...
But then, one could argue the same of any piece of prose, be it Shakespeare or shite.
Update on thread topic:
'An it were done, and done well, with nary a drop of blood split and yet
there layeth the beast, exhausted from the struggle.
Its boards replaced with utmost care within a shell more mighty
Its power magnified and graphics surpassed,
that it might fight once more in conflicts greater still.
All components installed successfully, all drivers updated, and system appears stable. Minor damage to rear panel and I fouled up the I/O panel a touch (had some weird arse prongs that served no purpose I had to bend out of the way), but else it were a clean install. Not bad for my first ever case swap.
